ROUTINES, why they can help keep you on track

Usually, in the summer we get rid of all set routines... mainly. This happens because we see the summertime as a time to be free, let go, and be our best selves. Well, that's wrong. Many people still have to work or go to school, but the idea of summertime can still affect their productivity as much as kids who get the entire summertime off.

You sleep in late, eat junk food, go on social media all day, or even worse, stay inside. I have caught myself in this same repetition. But we should not allow it to fully take over our lives until we have to go back to "reality". Yes, we should be having fun over this break period but having a set morning or night routine can increase your day-to-day productivity and make you feel more accomplished.

SO HOW HAVE I BEEN ABLE TO

INHERIT A ROUTINE INTO MY LIFE?

When I first came to the realization that I have been kinda slacking, I first thought that the time I was waking up and going to bed was way too off from a healthy sleep schedule. I was going to bed at 3:00 am. and waking up sometime close to 11:00 am. I would be waking up and think that the day was almost over. One morning I got up at 5:00 am. and was like now what do I do. I changed, grabbed a book, and started to walk. I walked to the closest Starbucks, then to my local park, and then walked home. I was probably outside for 2-3 hours, reading, walking, and listening to music. Once I got home I was like it's only 8:00 am. How? But after that day I started to wake up at 6:00 and grab my book, earbuds, phone, and a water bottle and go to watch the sunrise and to get in a level of exercise.

Even though changing the time I wake is such a small improvement it has allowed me to fully make the most out of my days. Since that adjustment to my mornings is happening during the summertime does not mean that it will end right as I start up school again. Once we create a routine or habit, we should not end it, unless it's bad. Being more productive during the day should continue throughout the year and not stop because we have a break period.

DETERMINING YOUR SLEEP SCHEDULE

We all sleep in a cycle of 90 minute periods. When we try and fix our existing sleep schedule, most of the time we choose a time to go to bed and a time to wake up that we think we can meet. We try so hard to go to bed and then wake up at the time we like to but we either, (a.) try and go to bed at that time but just can't fall asleep and (b.) then wake up and are too tired to get up so then we go back to sleep. This scenario happens because we are waking up during the 90 minute period and not waking up right as it ends. When you are trying to determine a time to go to bed and/or wake up then follow this simple process;

  1. Choose a time to go to bed that you are certain you can fall asleep by.

  2. Choose one of the following amounts of time that you think is the perfect amount of sleeping time. ( 6 hrs, 7 hrs 30 min, 9 hrs)

  3. Add the time amount of time you want to sleep to the time you choose to go to bed.

Sleeping correctly and for the right amount of time affects the way your day will go, and by officially determining the perfect sleep schedule for you, your goals for better sleep and a better routine will come to life.

THINGS TO TAKE FROM THIS:

A good routine can never hurt anyone, and make sure that once you have gotten your routine down to keep with it when and where ever you go.
